Our laboratory was involved in the organization of the exhibition "Nanostructures show their true colours" for European Heritage Days 2019, aimed at showing to the public how living creatures exploit structure to create colour.
Why are butterflies so colourful and why do some colours never fade? Maria, Benoit, Dominic, Laura and Sai explained through simple experiments and different exhibits how nanostructures on the wings of insects and birds create iridescent effects. The exhibition was co-organized with the external pageNCCR Bio-Inspired Materials and the Entomological Collection of ETH Zürich.
