Congrats Paolo! Paolo's work on shape memory magnetic soft gels has been published on the latest issue of Advanced Materials. The work is the result of a collaboration between our group and the Mesoscopic Systems group based at ETH and PSI.
The article concerns the creation of a soft magnetic shape‐memory composite by embedding droplets of magneto‐rheological fluid into a soft elastomeric matrix. When subjected to a magnetic field, the composite exhibits up to 30‐fold stiffening and displays an athermal, reversible magnetic shape‐memory, which is demonstrated with embossing, shear, and 3D deformation. Employing synchrotron X‐ray tomography, the internal structure of the material is revealed.
